Herbal Medicine

Reminding your body how to function optimally. Through the living tradition of East Asian herbalism

The intention behind classical East Asian herbal medicine has always been this: to remind your body how to function optimally — to give it the nourishment and support it needs to find its way back to balance and keep you living well.

This is not supplementation. It is a complete system of medicine, refined over two thousand years of continuous clinical use. At its best, it is highly individualized — each formula compounded to match the specific pattern of pathology present in a particular person at a particular moment in their healing. As your body changes, your formula changes with it.

During a herbal consultation at Malachite Medicine, you'll receive a comprehensive intake, pulse and tongue diagnosis, and a formula dispensed fresh from our medicinary. Melinda will listen carefully to the ways your body is asking to come into greater balance, and prescribe accordingly. Formulas may be offered as concentrated granules, raw herb decoctions, capsules, or tincture — whatever fits your life and condition best. Because healing should be able to meet you at home, or on the go.

Remote herbal consultations are available for patients outside Portland. Formulas are dispensed and shipped from the medicinary.

Conditions Commonly Addressed

  • Herbal medicine supports digestion at the root — improving function, reducing inflammation, and helping the body process and absorb more effectively.

  • Formulas are designed to support balance across hormonal systems, working with the body’s natural rhythms rather than forcing change.

  • Herbs help open the lungs, regulate immune response, and support recovery from both acute and chronic respiratory conditions.

  • Skin reflects internal patterns. Herbal medicine works from within to address inflammation, detoxification, and systemic imbalance.

  • Support is tailored to the individual — strengthening when depleted, calming when overactive, and restoring appropriate response.

  • Formulas are designed to rebuild energy over time, supporting deeper reserves rather than offering short-term stimulation.

  • Herbs can gently support the nervous system, helping the body move toward greater calm, stability, and resilience.

  • Herbal medicine supports circulation, reduces inflammation, and works alongside other treatments to address pain patterns more deeply.

  • Herbal care complements conventional treatment, supporting the body through complex or ongoing conditions with a focus on resilience and recovery.

  • After illness, herbal medicine helps restore energy, strengthen immunity, and support the body as it returns to balance.
